青年时代的沃尔夫曾退学入伍，参加朝鲜战争，回国后当过工程师、杂志编辑，后专职从事写作。20世纪80年代初期，长篇史诗《新日之书》一出版便引起轰动，沃尔夫也一跃成为幻想文坛的巨星。

吉恩•沃尔夫是最重要的当代美国作家之一。他的作品以叙事的游戏性著称，充满了隐喻、典故和谜题，以此探讨命运、知觉、时间的本质等命题，被同行誉为“北美的博尔赫斯”。沃尔夫1996年获得世界奇幻奖终生成就奖，2012年获美国科幻奇幻作家协会“大师奖”。
