劳里·加勒特（Laurie Garrett），美国著名女记者，获得皮博迪奖（The Peabody Award）、乔治·伯克奖（George Polk Award）和普利策奖（Pulitzer Award）这三大著名新闻奖项的第一人。曾就读于加州大学，攻读公共卫生，以优异成绩毕业后，又先后到斯坦福大学和哈佛大学进修。在校期间即对新闻事业产生浓厚兴趣，后来成为专业记者，在美全国公共广播电台、《新闻日报》等新闻单位就职。现为美对外关系委员会全球卫生高级研究员。著述颇多，除本书外，另有《失信：全球公共卫生事业之瘫痪》、《流行天下！传染病的世界》等，并且经常为各大报刊及通讯社撰稿。文字细腻生动，颇受好评。
