The First Amendment puts it this way: "Congress shall make no law...abridging the freedom of speech, or of the press." Yet, in 1960, a city official in Montgomery, Alabama, sued The New York Times for libel -- and was awarded $500,000 by a local jury -- because the paper had published an ad critical of Montgomery's brutal response to civil rights protests. The centuries of legal precedent behind the Sullivan case and the U.S. Supreme Court's historic reversal of the original verdict are expertly chronicled in this gripping and wonderfully readable book by the Pulitzer Prize -- winning legal journalist Anthony Lewis. 安东尼•刘易斯（Anthony Lewis），1927年3月生于纽约，毕业于哈佛学院。曾任《纽约时报》周日版编辑（1948-1952）、驻华盛顿司法事务报道记者（1955-1964）、伦敦记者站主任（1965-1972）、专栏作者（1969-2001），目前是《纽约书评》专栏作者。1955年、1963年两度获普利策奖。刘易斯曾在哈佛大学执教（1974-1989），并自1982年起，担任哥伦比亚大学“詹姆斯•麦迪逊讲席”教授，讲授第一修正案与新闻自由。著有《吉迪恩的号角》（Gideon’s Trumpet）、《十年人物：第二次美国革命》（Portrait of a Decade: The Second American Revolution）、《言论的边界：美国宪法第一修正案简史》（Freedom for the Thought that we Hate: A Biography of the First Amendment）。刘易斯的妻子是马萨诸塞州最高法院首席大法官玛格丽特•马歇尔，两人现居马萨诸塞州坎布里奇。
